Daughter Dear: By way of defending myself you must remember Mary Todd Lincoln was in the next bed when I had my hysterestomy. Things were done differently in the Civil War days. Yes, I did have clots the size of Rhode Island and the embarrassment that goes along with them, however, I can't say I was in pain physically. And you are correct in saying if you didn't have this procedure done you just weren't in style. I think the doctors were running a "special" on them. In ancient days they kept you in the hospital for 5 days and at the time the company I was working for allowed 8 weeks recuperation time at home. Believe me I took complete and full advantage of this offer, although I must say that amount of time was not needed.
